Join or Die

In 1754, Benjamin Franklin created the now-famous “Join, or Die” symbol for the Pennsylvania Gazette, urging the thirteen colonies to unite against French and Native American forces. Twelve years later, he republished it during the American Revolution as a call for independence from British rule. The image resurfaced again during the Civil War, and for over 250 years has been reimagined in many forms—always carrying the same message: Americans of every race, color, and creed must unite to keep America “the land of the free and the home of the brave.” God bless the USA.
